Earth Day celebration eco-links

Happy Earth Day! Recycling, reusing, and conserving has become even more important to me lately. I spend a lot of time trying to recycle everything possible, to reuse, buy less (I've had limited success here) and to give what I can't use. One way that I do that is by using Freecycle, a mailing list system where people post things that they have to give away as well as things that they need. Most cities have a Freecycle group. I live in Lafayette and they have a freecycle group, so that gives me hope for other small cities. Regardless, you can look for your city on the Freecycle site. Another tool that assists me in my eco-conscious activity is a simple list of the different types of plastic and their corresponding numbers. I got a handy tear-out copy in the premiere issue of National Geographic's new magazine, The Green Guide. I have it posted on my refrigerator for easy reference. If you aren't interested in purchasing the magazine (which is available as an e-subscription as well as print), you can find the same information on The Daily Green. Or if you need a quick reference, you can use the one on Viva Verde.

If you want to get started using environmentally friendly cleaning products, you can make your own for minimal cost or you can take advantage of Amazon's sale on green products and purchase cleaning products.

To lessen my impact on the earth, I eat organic and local when I can. I reduce my paper towel use by using bamboo cloths for cleaning. My coffee is organic and fair trade certified because caring about the earth means caring about the people who live on it as well. I use rechargable batteries. I wear sweaters inside during the winter and open my windows during the spring to reduce my heating and cooling usage.

The BBC takes the environment seriously. They also take games seriously which is why you can play this cute online game, It's a Green Life! This is a great way to teach kids about environmental issues and conservation.

For this year's Earth Day, I'm making a resolution--to incorporate ecological/environmental issues and resources into this blog.
